Buddy is a svelte 23 pound, approximately 7 year old sweet Pug boy. Three months ago, when Buddy came into Pug Rescue of Florida, he was overweight at 30 pounds. He was fed ice cream, chicken, rice, and anything he wanted, whenever he wanted it, and getting the incorrect dose of his insulin. He loves broccoli! He has limited vision and no hearing but he knows his way totally around the yard and house and in and out the dog door and he ALWAYS knows where the food is. He is on a special food and steamed veggies for treats. He will find his foster Mom wherever she is in the house just to let his presence be known.
Buddy is currently on 3 units of insulin every 12 hours generally given about a half hour after each of his two meals.The cost of insulin is approximately $25 per bottle, it will go bad before you even come close to running out. It is good for 6-7 weeks, and it absolutely MUST be kept refrigerated. The syringes used to deliver the insulin are about $12 for 100 needles.
Buddy?s special food is Royal Canin Diabetic Food is around $50 a bag, however it lasts a long time because Buddy but only gets 1/3 to ½ cup twice a day, as he is currently on a diet. Once he maintains his weight, your vet may choose to increase his portion to a ½ cup a day.
For his eye care, he gets tacrolimus drops twice a day.
His ears should be kept clean at least once to twice a week. His ears are cleaned with Baush and Laumb EYE wash, (NOT contact cleaner), or as directed by vet. It is approximately 3 dollars a bottle, lasts a good while.
Buddy is totally house trained, extremely playful, loves kids, and sleeping in the sun. He can be the only dog, or will be fine in a pack. He even likes cats! He likes his tug of war time! He is currently living in Vero Beach. His adoption fee is $200 which helps Rescue with some of his medical bills.
